<quote>So I spent the time and whipped up a Forge map, mostly for getting a feel for the new weapons and armor abilities. As part of that, I tested the hardlight shield against everything I could think of.
POSITIVE RESULTS:
Stops, actually reflects in most cases, weapon fire from every single weapon, including all vehicle weapons, when the shield is hit directly. (Yes, including the Scorpion Tank's main cannon and the Gauss Warthog cannon.)
Spartan Laser is not reflected, just nullified.
Melee attack hitting the shield directly is nullified.
Energy sword attack hitting the shield directly is nullified.
Gravity hammer will pop your shield (*not* the hardlight shield), but not kill you. Second hit will kill you. I believe this effect is because the blast from the hammer throws you up, which allows the splash damage to hit you from below.
Charged plasma pistol shot is reflected. It doesn't affect the hardlight shield.
Plasma grenades don't stick to it, and fall to the ground. Plasma grenades already stuck to you before raising the shield will kill you. (This isn't armor lock.)
Sticky detonator rounds don't stick to it, and fall to the ground. However, you could still get killed pretty easily if you don't leave blast range and the other guy waits until you lower the hardlight shield before detonating. Also, if stuck before raising the shield, you're dead.
Splash damage from things like grenades, fuel rod shots hitting the ground, rockets shot at the ground, incinerator cannon shot secondary explosions, will all be nullified as long as the blast is more or less directly in front of you and the bottom of the hardlight shield is touching the ground. Splash damage from explosions that occur next to you, behind the hardlight shield, will still damage/kill you.
Rocket warthog volley can still kill you because a lot of the rockets will actually hit the ground around you, due to the spread, rather than reflecting safely off the hardlight shield.
Weapon fire reflection can be used offensively if you're close enough. The hardlight shield is slightly rounded, so shots that are off center will probably bounce away harmlessly, but shots near the center of the shield will bounce back and can hit the attacker. I accidentally destroyed some nearby vehicles during the Scorpion Tank test, so conceivably you could destroy the tank with its own attacks if they reflected just right.
NEGATIVE RESULTS:
The hardlight shield has no effect at all on vehicle movement. You can still be splattered, and probably more easily since you can't move as fast. The Mantis stomp attack is likewise unaffected.
As said above, splash damage that occurs next to you, behind the hardlight shield, is still dangerous.
I CAN'T REMEMBER RESULTS:
I can't remember what happened with pulse grenades. I'll retest and post a follow-up. I think what happens is that a pulse grenade detonated in front of you still damages and possibly kills you, because the field it generates isn't affected by the hardlight shield at all.
POSSIBLY ALSO USEFUL TIP:
The hardlight shield can be aimed. It maintains a position relative to your aiming reticule. That means if you look up, the shield tilts up, giving attackers an opening on shooting your feet or allowing splash damage in front of you to hit you. Keep that in mind when looking around with it out.
Ask away with any other questions and I'll try to answer them. If you want to try things out for yourself, I put up the Forge map I used in my Fileshare, with ordnance drops for every weapon and all vehicles loaded. Gamertage is "shmip".</quote>
