"nose down" - so that's what you call it!

Thu Nov 20, 2008 11:38 am

I recieved a PM from a new member here. He was wondering about the mysterious "nose down" manuver.
I hope you don't mind Taxman... but this looks like something others may gain from as well...
ENJOY! and let me know how it turns out!

"nose down" - hehe... i named it that cause it's what you do!!! take a look!

here's 1 example
in this example the camera is not "locked" so you wont see exactly how it's done.... but you will see the results
have your dad angle the "camera" as low to the ground in the front of your hog right before impact. this keeps the "camera" on the hood of the hog which will keep it from bouncing up. the "camera" has some "force" on the way the hog will roll/slide... so its really important to get "under" the other hog.
it's also a good idea to STOP at the point of impact...and then drive backwards away slowly. this will do 2 things for you
1) it keeps the hog still... so you(as the gunner) can see what the other hog is doing (rolling, popping a wheelie...etc) and then can react appropriately.
2) backing away plays to the gunner as well... getting you the best angle possible.

BE CAREFULL!!! when you "POP" another hog... BOTH HOGS become no-shields... aim for the gunner right away, cause he will be aiming for you
this tactic is something that will need to be practiced and perfected. GOOD LUCK and let me know how it turns out!

also, i have this on my fileshare. it's the 4th slot on my fileshare called "da bump1".
DL that and watch it with your dad. this is pretty much "the bump".
it's in my view so you will see me "camera down"

keep me posted on progress!!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I just wanna add that the nose-down is probably the only way to leave a hog v. hog fight ready for ANOTHER hog v. hog fight OR to survive two hogs attacking you.

(I'm not counting fights where the other gunner never put a shot on you as "hog v. hog fights", only those where both hog teams were aware of each-other and had a chance to do real damage)

Sometimes, if done just right and with the appropriate amount of good fortune, you'll find yourself surprisingly intact. Imagine going to rocket spawn in Rat's Nest, encountering two enemy hogs, and nose-downing the first one. If you do it at all the rear hog can't hit only you it must hit its ally hog, and if you do it perfectly with an appropriate dose of luck then the rear hog won't be able to put any shots on you at all while your gunner rips into the belly of its friend. Your shields still hurt, but the timer for their regeneration to begin starts the moment you stop taking damage, which should be the moment you pushed the other hog up so the gunner couldn't hit you anymore.

I also have a video on http://www.gamevee.com/viewVideo/Halo_3/GeeVee/No_Seatbelt/443406 , it's not from my PoV, but you can see the results of said method. I can probably find a few more, as I use this a lot particularly on Rat's Nest. While you will see that we rolled as well, we were able to get back in and continue on our way.

It should be noted that straight head on collisions with both drivers nosing down will often result in both hogs bouncing backwards into wheelies with no shields. Hitting off center, using either your driver or passenger side fenders, will often result in you losing no shields and outright rolling the other hog. While the other hog's crew are still at full shields, their capacity for damage dealing to you has been significantly reduced, possibly allowing you to take on two enemy hogs without sacrificing your shields or relying as much on luck. Another plus is that it greatly increases your chances of getting an Overkill off of two enemy hogs ::thumbs::

I've been trying to use it more often now. and got some good ones in when I actually got a hog vs hog... no splatters but i flipped both hogs backwards and took down both a 2 man and a 3 man hog w/out loosing half my shield. I don't know but does holding the nose down make you'r hog go faster in general. I mean you loose a lot of vision by dooing it. ::side::

I usually just go for head on, or no collision. But head on, I can usually get under the other hog, and have my gunner destroy it from the undercarriage.
Or I drive circles around them. Literally! My gunner and I both play on ten, so when orbiting an other hog, we can hit them before they can swing around on us. It's not guaranteed, but I know that not many people play on 10.
I will have to try this theory though, since it seemed very effective, but probably takes a lot of practice.

Sensitivity does not affect the speed at which the warthog turret rotates horizontally.

I've seen that video so many times, and it never gets old. The clip cuts off so suddenly; priceless!

Now, I have two videos. They are both taken from my point of view. This should give you a good idea of how to do it.

i forgot about these!!!
the triple splatter is PRICELESS... however let it be noted that this is NOT the norm.
hotchocolat just NAILED the other guy. most likely he was NOT nosing down because i do believe if both hogs do it, it drastically effects the outcome. one hog may get lower or have a better "ground of dirt" for better grip.

also... i've found that nosing down when hitting ghosts, nosing down will cause it to "pop" and the driver falls out
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Jedi makes an EXTREMELY valuable point:

There are multiple ways to achieve the result of a nose-down, they can be used seperately or in conjunction.
I know of the following methods:
1. Brake at the last second, this drops your front
2. Aim the camera down so the hog "drives" into the ground
3. Turn slightly left or right at the last second, this will drop ONE of your front corners. If you turn right it will drop the right-front corner of the hog. If you turn right it will drop the left-front corner of the hog.
4. Throw it in reverse, this will also drop the nose. Beware that reverse takes longer and wil require some excellent timing and practice

Notes:
#1 and #4 are easily combined

#3 and #4 are probably the healthiest once you perfect them because they decrease the amount of force created by the two hogs hitting head on and therefore leave you with more shields

#3 is effective for dropping the other hog, but you can't wear them as a human shield then.

I didn't know about #2 until Louie posted it. I had forgotten about #3 until Jedi posted it but have had massive, consistent success with it in the past. I hadn't thought of #4 until it was posted. I've been in the gunner's seat while my driver did #1 PERFECTLY so while it's not the healthiest (I compare it to going in for a beatdown) it IS consistently effective.

Be careful, people have been playing Demolition Derby with Warthogs since Halo 1 so they don't have to be a full-time driver to know how to flip another hog. Also randoms in Matchmaking are getting better with the hog, partially due to our existence.

I find that unnecessary, as a hog going at at least most of its top speed will result in the ghost being splattered, without nosing down.

I would also like to reiterate that [i]shields drop[/r]! Note in both my videos, my shields were depleted, either fully or almost completely. Now, you may beat the other hog, but if there are one or two enemies looking your way, there is a high chance you will die. So, as always, try to fight other hogs close to your teammates, as the little extra firepower could help you.

Bloody's tips probably work as well, although I have not tried them out yet, since I don't have much time to think and try to remember. However, they are certainly worth a shot.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who was curious or had thoughts about all this, i had started to research it a while ago only because it seemed that in rats nest i had much better chances for survival when i "looked down" on the other driver on even ground. but now we are finding new tactics for head to head... or hog 2 hog combat! also i have seen similar results when "going down" on a ghost.. but now for the fun part... can we collectively figure out a way to colide and survive w/ choppers? that would be handy

by the by triple splatters in this manner make me

There is only one way I know of, and it doesn't a;ways work, to survive a Chopper ramming you even if he is boosting. Turn, that's right turn and let him hit the corner of you Hog. A good bit of the time it will result in only a glancing blow and will turn you away from each other allowing your gunner to shoot him in the back as he recovers. There is also a small possibility of you splattering him. I have a saved film that I need to make into a clip of me pulling this off against Blackdragon on Sandtrap, as he came around the corner at Banshee side Shotgun spawn and tried to boost into me and I pulled to the left a little and he exploded giving me the Splatter medal. I won't say I was unscathed as my shields did drop a bit and I'm pretty sure I died soon after from another Hog, but I did defeat a Chopper in what would normally have been a no win situation. In the post game lobby he was shocked to say the least. ::thumbs::
