Benromach Single Malt Scotch Speyside Whisky 10 year old

whisky buffs wrote:
Nose: Thick and creamy. dried apricots, those briny notes and a little spice (paprika) emerge with water.
Palate: A full and mouth coating body. Woody, apricots, raisins and lots of BBQ notes
Coffee and toffee with an underlying soft smoky character.
Becomes much softer with water with less depth of body.
Finish: More earthy, peatiness and smoke on the finish.

I got the apricots, brine and paprika, toffee and smoke.

Jim Beam, Black Label Kentucky Straight Bourbon

the buffs said:This eight-year-old expression possesses greater depth than White Label, with more complex fruit and vanilla notes, plus liquorice, vanilla and sweet rye. 45.0% ABV, 70cl, £21.95, specialist whisky merchants.

I found this unsubtle and very brash, sweet, definately liquorice/molasses and vanilla, overpowering making it an experience although quite smooth.

Jack Daniels No.7 Tennessee Bourbon

The Whisky Bible wrote:
a powerful nose of vanilla, smoke and liquorice. on the palate it offers oily cough-mixture and treacle, with a final kick of maple syrup and burnt wood lingering in the surprisingly long finish. not particularly complex, but decidedly muscular and certainly distinctive

What i Got: Smooth and surprisingly dry, lots of caramel and liquorice notes, subtlest Rye I've had.

A beginners rye, soft and balanced, not that smooth though, the sweetness hides a lot.

John Davon Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Fine as a mixer, but falls distinctly flat straight.

Sweet to the nose but quite rough overall

Heredotus Fumosus - Benriach Scotch
The whisky guys wrote:
Heredotus Fumosus, the whisky has been finished in Pedro Ximinez Sherry Butts, and the name, which is Latin, literally translates to 'smoky sherry'.
Bottled at 46% (92 proof), at natural colour and non chill filtered,

TASTING NOTES
Nose
Sweet peat and smoke, clean citrus and vanilla notes with a rich backdrop of Pedro Ximinez Sherry.

Colour
Golden.

Taste
Sweet peat and smoky kippers, bog myrtle, lavender and sultanas, with a sublime Pedro Ximinez Sherry finish.

I got the Peaty salty taste and the vanilla, sultanas and the not to my personal taste sherry finish.

well balanced whisky if a tad overpowering perhaps a little too much all at once and an over smokey/sherry finish, other expressions would probably be very nice

another from my trip to scotland

I think the first whiskey I ever had was Makers with ginger ale. If your just starting off I suggest easing into it. This is a nice smooth bourbon, mixed with gingale is a delicous cocktail. Then on your next venture to the pub I would go with over ice, then finally try it neat.

I recal a young blond that I was training for a bartender. She asked me on her first shift what a good drink would be to impress a guy she was having a date with. I said any single malt scotch. For the next 2 weeks I made her drink a different scotch neat after work. Her date came by and thanked me for the $200 bar tab she had wrung up at dinner. LOL to th day she is a hi class scotch drinker. BE CAREFUL how you mold your taste buds.

Woodford Reserve Distillers Select

Thu Sep 15, 2011 4:52 pm

Woodford Reserve Distillers Select
Bourbon 45% abv

"Distillers select is elegant yet robust on the nose, chocolate raisins, dried fruit, burnt sugar, ginger, and a touch of saddle soap. Equally complex on the palate. Distiller's Select is frangrant and fruity, the finish displays lingering vanilla notes as well as peppery oak."

Haut's GF and Haut can definately identify blind all these flavours, for the price you can rarely do better in a bourbon.

top notch!
