Game of Thrones

Tue Mar 29, 2011 5:05 am

One of the best books I have ever read in my life is going to premiere as a show on HBO in less than 3 weeks.

Image

A Game of Thrones is the first novel of the Song of Ice & Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I read it a few years ago for the first time and loved it. (I named one of my cats Tyrion after my favorite character) About a week ago I picked it up again in anticipation of the new show and I am loving it even more. If you are a fan of fantasy, medieval politics & warfare, or just a damn good story I'd encourage you to check it out, book or film.

I have been looking forward to this show for 2 years; my wait will finally end on April 17th. If you can read the book first, awesome! If not, I'm sure you'll still enjoy the show as much as I will on HBO.

The show is very well cast. Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, & Lena Headey are major players just to name a few. Already halfway through my 2nd reading of the book the actors who are portraying my favorite characters have already taken their place in my mind's eye.

I'm posting this because I know it will be amazing and I'd love to be able to chat about the show with some of you. Also, the show IS airing in Europe... I believe on the Sky network.

My former roommate suggested I read A Song of Ice and Fire two years ago. It's taken me a long time to catch up, but I'm hooked now. Been reading it nonstop for a little while now. I'm on the third book: A Storm of Swords. I wish I had HBO so I could watch this...but I guess I'll have to seek out other means to do that.

Also, Icebird, my buddy loves Tyrion as well. I personally like to read Jon's PoV the most.

A Storm of Swords is my favorite book of the 4 released so far. (#5 comes out in July) That book is just plain amazing. One chapter from Daenerys POV just may have been the highlight of the whole series for me. And another incredible chapter stands out in my mind but I won't say any more, I don't want to spoil it for you.

Jon Snow is a close 2nd! His chapters are great as well.

It looks like I'll be going over to a friends place every Sunday night for the next couple months to watch it. I'll subscribe to HBO if I'm able to get a little more cash flow... I haven't even seen the series yet and I know I'll want to buy it on DVD.

I have really enjoyed the Game of Thrones series, and think HBO will do a fantastic job. My only fear is that Martin won't finish the darn books before HBO gets to the end of what has been published!!

Come on George RR Martin....WRITE FASTER!!!! ::lol::
This sig available for rent.

Solid cast. I've never heard of this series but I feel like I've missed out on something big

It hasn't aired yet, it starts on the 17th, so you haven't missed out. Or you could pick up the book. If you can't watch it on HBO I'm sure it'll be on DVD late summer/early fall.

I think it is cast extremely well. Just the brief moment we see Arya in the preview I posted makes me think I'm going to like her a whole lot more in the series than I did in the book. (On my first read through, I'm liking her more now on my 2nd)

I'm speeding through my 2nd reading of Game of Thrones. I was timing it out to finish just before the series starts but I think I'm going to end up finishing a week early.

I do need a new book....

I really enjoyed the first 15 minutes of the pilot episode. It looks like a medieval zombie apocalypse starring Boromir. My friend might be able to TiVo it but otherwise I'll have that same friend Netflix it later on

Sean Bean (Eddard Stark, FKA Boromir) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) were actually fan picks before the series was cast and the producers pitched it to them with that in mind. So Sean Bean signed on knowing that the fans wanted him regardless of the risk of getting typecast.

The Others (medieval zombies) in the book are only heavily featured in 2 chapters of the first book. They play a larger part in later books. The series will be more about people's struggle for power and the politics & intrigue involved. The preview I shared barely covers what you can expect. If you want to dig a little deeper, you can watch the House & Character features on the Game of Thrones YouTube page.

Poor Poor Sean Bean... has no one else seen The Island!? The man is more than just a long haired warrior... he's british and probably something more than 'just' british but we may never know because
Spoiler: show
I'm sure he dies at the end of this mini series
... I mean, he is Sean F'n Bean!

Plot spoiler alert! ~Sarge
