Every Frame a Painting (Media Analysis Thread)

Mon Jan 25, 2016 11:10 am

A creator I like, Tony Zhou, does this series where he talks about the use of cinematography in movie storytelling. I'm a huge fan of his work and will start posting his new videos here. These are two of his most popular episodes:

Jackie Chan: How to Do Action Comedy -

Spoiler: show

Akira Kuwosawa: Composing Movement -

Spoiler: show

Now I want to go back and re-watch some of the Coen movies and pay more attention to the way they film. Does he do a take on Wes Anderson and the way he directs films?

Tony gets this question a lot. He thinks Wes Anderson has been covered well enough by others and provided links to their content.

Link to video essays.

Tony released a new video on why the Marvel Cinematic Universe has forgettable music, expanding into the concept of temp music and its affect on the Hollywood blockbuster.

I could have maybe answered his question with a few examples but only one is a piece written for the movie/character itself and this would be "captain america march". The reason why is because we played in the music club before like 2 years ago all the othe music would be already known songs the used in their OST. Iron Man had Black Sababth and AC/DC , Deadpool had DMX and Guardians of the Galaxy had alot of 80s pop and rock music.

It's really a shame that the rely ...or better say that they rather go the safe way instead of the more riskier emotional rewarding music. I always get goosebumbs hearing the Jurassic Park theme I could have also hummed Star Wars,James Bond,Harry Potter,Pink Panther,Mission impossible, Rocky (gonna fly now),Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Carribean.

Funny that now it's video games that produce alot if quality music .

Thanks for posting this Sarge I'm now roaming through Youtube listening to film music :D

Although I listen to a lot of soundtracks so I knew a few tunes off the top of my head, my only go to one that I can remember most of the time is from the A New King from the Thor soundtrack.

I very much dislike temp music, but one thing you notice and is kinda common sense is a lot of composers re use a lot of their music just like how animators may do the same in a drawn cartoon. So there are often times when a track composed by John Williams comes on and I cannot tell whether it's from Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Hook, until it gets to the part that makes that track specific. This happens for a large majority of scores/songs I listen to. Whether that be I just have bad memory, but with a lot of composers imitating each others work and then even reusing their own sometimes it's a guessing game of "Ok this can be one of 3 composers and one of 5 movies right now, let's wait for a specific part in the song that gives it away."

I'm glad he touched on the point of how directors want music to be forgettable now and rather than have it convey emotion just have it compliment the scene and show something with the perfect example of both the Captain America clips and Thor clips. Although for me I do feel a wide range of emotions both when listening to the music as a stand alone or in the scene, there are certain decisions that annoy me such as talking or narrating over emotional music.

I would say though cinema and music have always done the whole "ominous sound" when something is bad or dangerous and "single high note" when scenes are sad thing so I don't thing that's anything new and has always been a safe bet when it comes to scoring films. I thoroughly enjoyed this video even if I do have issues with the franchises he picked to name songs from (but I see the point he was making).

Yeah, this is the first time Tony has really bashed a process. Usually he highlights creative choices people are making. I'm with him though. Music is so powerful that it can make something last forever.

Just look at the menu music for Mass Effect 1 and Halo 3. Look at the signature music for Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Inception.
