Cinco's Non-Fiction Books of Wisdom (and discussion if you want)

Fri Nov 04, 2016 5:46 pm

As I said a few days ago in chat I was going to publish a books list that I've read that have shaped the person I am in some way. Not all of these books are five star on amazon, but many are.

Here's my list in no specific order:

7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen Covey
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GOZV3TM?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_rhrhyb5GDBTAA
This book really make you think about character in a new way. Stephen Covey was world famous for being a man that shaped the character and success of many people.

The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology - Ray Kurzweil
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QCSA7C?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_RjrhybQKKSC5T
This book by famous inventor, author and now senior google thought leader explains how exponential technologies like AI and biotech will change the human race forever.

Crush It! - Gary Vaynerchuk
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0029ZA3H4?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_Wlrhyb3DEBB92
A read read on how to really figure out what your passion is in turn it into your daily work. Engaging author and has an incredible online following. A friend of mine works with Gary frequently and feels Gary is responsible for his living his dream job.

It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy - Michael Abrashoff
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HPW9R4?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_iorhybY9VMNZA
This book was given to me as a gift. It's a solid read for anyone that's going to lead people. Go through a real life Navy ship experience and how to use the leanings leading anything from corporate teams to halo clans

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose - Tony Hsieh
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003JTHXN6?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_kqrhyb1H6HB5G
Written by the founder of Zappos, talks about the work culture you want to build or work in to be happy in your job. A good amount of business knowledge as well as a good story about zappos and how their company has become an extremely desirable company to work for.

The Last Lecture - Jeff Zaslow
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00139VU7E?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_PsrhybPPKNDZV
As close to a tear jerker that I would read. A first person read about how a man who knew he wasn't going to live a long life got the most out of his life. Emotionally motivating and makes you cherish life more than you did before reading.

The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It - Kelly McGonigal
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005ERIRZE?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_5urhybRZBEA46
Written by a Standford(or other highly reputable skill) discusses many techniques and experiments she's done around the idea of will power and how to defeat your procrastination and other demons and prevent you from being who you want to be.

QBQ! The Question Behind the Question: Practicing Personal Accountability at Work and in Life - John G. Miller
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OIZUQW?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_SxrhybEBZB4F9
Wow this book changes a lot of perspective. Basic premise is that everything that impacts your life could have been influenced by you. Ask yourself what you could have done in the past to have made the present situation better or not happen(if bad). Short read but awesome.

Awaken the Giant Within: How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial - Anythong Robbins
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EM101Q?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_qArhybYT9V2F4
It seems corny, but I love Tony Robbins. I've read and watched lots of his content and it's exceptional. This book is a solid book that can get you started on Robbins.

Rich Dad Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money - That The Poor And Middle Class Do Not! - Robert Kiyoski
https://www.amazon.com/dp/1612680003/ref=wl_it_dp_v_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=31V9IZD2GZK5G
This is the most controversial on the list as Kiyosaki who has a book empire but has many skeptics about his actual financial empire. If you exclude any skepticism, it's a great read on two different perspectives on money. Also basic personal accounting like Income, Expenses, Assets and Liabilities is covered.

Shine: Using Brain Science to Get the Best from Your People - Ned Hallowell
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004CFAZYA?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_EGrhybBG9Q6BC
Primarily for leaders, but a good read about brain sciences and intrinsic motivation. Again if you're not a leader, you should read this book and look for a job from the perspective of a leader using the principals in this book.

Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World - Jane McGonigal (no relation to Kelly from other book on list)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G8Q1Q4?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_9IrhybYN6DH62
wow, as a gamer this is a must read. It discusses how game designers have become so great at using mastery, purpose and autonomy to motivate us that people out there want to apply game dynamics to everything.

The 4-Hour Workweek - Tim Ferriss
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002WE46UW?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_aMrhybVTFZX2V
I read slowly and don't like reading, but I've read this twice and have a hard copy, kindle and audio. I've read and listened a few times. So much usable content in this book. Tim Ferriss is also a great person to follow on social media

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity - David Allen
https://amzn.com/0143126563
This book is so successful that the acronym GTD(Getting things done) is referred to by apps, website and other books. It has spawned an industry around his methods in productivity. Another awesome person to follow on social media. Side note my wife had a work dinner with the author and he said that he wrote the book because he was kinda lazy but knew he needed to get things done so he built a system that in his mind accounted for his own laziness.

Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World - Peter H. Diamandis (Currently reading 75% done)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LD1RZGM?ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_XQrhybM9RF9V3
terrific content for anyone looking to make a difference in the world or at least learn how guys like Musk and Branson operate. I like the audio version so much that I will likely by a hard copy for reference.

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RO9VJK/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
Small business consultant and author Michael E. Gerber, with sharp insight gained from years of experience, points out how common assumptions, expectations, and even technical expertise can get in the way of running a successful business.

This is an interesting and useful read for anybody considering running a business (large or small) or that's interested in the subject. It's become a reference tool for me.
I messed with Duce and got banned. laugh at my expense...

I'm a big fan of Crucial Conversations.

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Conversations-Talking-Stakes-Second/dp/0071771328/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

It's one of the few books I have on Audio, so that I can listen to it on the way to work. I have a tendency to be abrasive when I'm not in agreement with someone, so this has helped tremendously.

A guy that works for me used to teach crucial conversations training. I didn't read the full book but have the training materials and took a training.
