Re: I need film. Seriously. (Film Session Tonight, Jan 17)

I expect it's a bit of a hassle, but when you get the chance to let us know whose films you've downloaded will you let us know? In addition to being thoroughly embarrased by my performance in most of my games and disinterested in them being publicly available for long, I also have a large batch of Oddball games I could upload if you were interested in getting some of that data.

On an unrelated note, I really enjoy playing Oddball in Halo 4 with a team. I HATE playing it solo with randoms, but with a team I've found myself really digging the way Oddball plays. It gives you an asset to protect but it's an asset your team can exchange amongst themselves to keep from one player costing you the game. The ability to pass the Oddball + the design of Halo 4 makes Oddball an excellent teamwork gametype. When we've gone in with a full party we had multiple games of 300-0, and more that were close. I think Oddball will be a good gametype for teams to train in, because it keeps you together and focused on keeping each other alive. Were I trying to train a squad for Matchmaking, I would go into Oddball.

I've been kind of lazy about labeling everything. I won't really know what I decide to watch until tonight.

So I spent some time doing some science on Adrift while watching some of Bloody's film. I'll post some of it in a thread for Adrift. Keep sending film though. I plan to transition to Vortex off Criporc's film next.

Edit: Here is the Adrift thread I made with some ideas and plans I developed last night: viewtopic.php?f=131&t=14493&p=158380#p158380

I have now uploaded a bunch of Oddball games, some SWAT, and I think one Dominion and one more CTF game.

SWAT may not seem especially helpful and it may not be, but people move differently in SWAT. It's all about coming from or being in a location that your enemy isn't looking at, so if you want the data is there. Sadly I didn't camp nearly as hard in these SWAT games as I would normally because there was a multi-kill challenge I was after, normally I like to put myself in a specific high-traffic perch that will get me the first shot on a lot of people. Moving is what they want you to do in SWAT and in Halo 4, thus it is often the worst thing you can do.

There are three effective strategies I've found in Oddball: Set up somewhere defensible with your team around you, move your whole team with the ball, or the ball carrier keeps the ball live and moving around the map while his/her team stalls the enemy team anywhere they meet them (The ball carrier can't sprint, but he moves faster than people who have to fight constantly. Also you can toss the ball and sprint after it when you have the space and safety).

Defensible positions are map dependent.

Abandon red team, for example, starts with a huge advantage in that map (In ALL gametypes red team has the advantage, it's worst in Oddball. Generally don't vote for Abandon, but when you do you want to be red. It's like Exile in reverse). All they have to do is get the ball and pull back to their spawn. Abandon is a nightmare for blue team in any close match.

In Adrift the two non-base corners are best because when your team starts to lose the fight the ball carrier can hit the mancannons and force the enemy team to chase him/her back to his/her team. The bases are NOT good camp grounds for oddball because you're fighting 3v4 to defend them.

In Haven there are no strong points, better to move with the ball. More than any other it's worth throwing the ball over the edge in this map. In one game the ball was camping by one of the mancannons and I tried but failed to make a pull that involved leaping in, boltshotting the ball carrier, and then flinging the ball out the mancannon opening. It's that important to get the ball away from the enemy team. If you can grab the ball from them and get it over a ledge that is better than trying to engage them. By the way for anyone throwing the ball over the edge of the map please remember that you can THROW it instead of suiciding like a clown. Suicides come with longer respawn times and now your team has to fight for the ball reset with one less person.

In Solace the bases are highly defensible (for this reason I tend to like Solace). When you get pushed out it's best for the ball carrier to run to the other base. You don't want to get caught between them very often.

Complex sucks as always, teams tend to get long runs with the ball before losing it because the map is so open you can't move to or from a location safely. In the one game I uploaded the ball carrier jumps on a teammate's head to get into a good position, but he's really just out of his team's way there and not actually especially safe. The best strategies in complex all involve keeping the ball in one place, but they're all high-risk high-reward. You get it out to a defensible location and the chances of the enemy getting it are low, but when they do they'll have your positioning and you'll have the same tough nut to crack they did.
