Playing Reinhardt

Thu Mar 30, 2017 2:38 pm

This is a guide I will put work in over time. If others want to contribute, i'd like to add videos of examples, information on character stats and etc. Today I will focus on the mindset of playing Reinhardt, and a few small tips.

Reinhardt is a pure power character. If you like american football, he is most comparable to your offensive line; He may go unheralded at times, but you notice when he makes plays, overpowers people, and he is ultimately the reason you win games. There is no more influential a character in the game. Yet, his kit is incredibly basic and easy to learn. So what separates a passable Reinhardt from a great Reinhardt? The answer is mentality.

A great Rein is confident and poised. They understand that they can win an entire fight with one play- but they also recognize that they are the only thing in the way of the opposing Reinhardt doing the same to their team. Really, 70% of the time as Reinhardt, you're involved in one long fight against the other Reinhardt. If you can dominate the other Reinhardt, there is nothing the opposing team can do- similar to a massive lineman busting through the middle of the line with a head full of steam. The best way to do this is to get your ultimate faster than the opposing Reinhardt, fire yours off without being blocked, and blocking theirs.

Every Reinhardt picks up on the flamestrike's ability to gain ult charge, but what many miss out on is how much charge you can gain simply by swinging through the other Rein's shield. The best way to do this (assuming you have healer support) is to quickly close in on the Reinhardt by dropping your shield, jumping, and while you're in the air putting your shield up. Once you land you drop it, jump and put it back up. Do this in quick succession until you're in range of your hammer, swing however many times you can (based on how much healing you're getting, how much damage they're doing, whether they have a character like Roadhog, etc), then back away before their Rein works up the confidence to swing back. Once you have your ult charge, either call for your team to break the other Rein's shield or, try to bait their Rein into dropping his own shield and quickly (note, not while you're in the air, as you do not ult until you hit the ground) firing off your ultimate into their Rein and ideally, the teammates behind his shield. Follow this up with a flamestrike through the stunned team, maybe swing once or twice and charge through their ranks to pin a player for certain death.
