i just noticed u do it differently then i do

i pull into a donut to "spread the love"
but the problem usually is the "start up" time of the donut gets me killed alot

am i doing it wrong? and is the way u showed more effective?

actually Kobe i don't think there is a "wrong" way
donuts work well (kinda what i do in the 2nd hornet fight)
i tend to use the 'no shields' method - meaning that i wait till I (or gunner) go no shields, then turn around to allow the other person to take all bullets
the only thing i can say about donuts is that
A) ur sitting still for the most part.... frags/rockets will find you easily
B) you could potentially give the kill to the enemy... donuts gives the "spread" an equal playing field... so if you START the fight w/ one person (you or ur driver) at half shields... then they will still die 1st... instead of a more controlled outcome of using 1 set of shields 1st

a good thing w/ donuts is that sometimes the bullets hit the frame of the hog and don't really hurt anyone (bullets to the hog damage the DRIVER... just not as much as direct hits)

There is a wrong way when your in CQB with another hog and when you spin you knock your gunners aim off which sometimes gets you killed.
Noticed this when I was gunning.

Im getting the impression that some people think that you spin on the spot*which isn't always the best option.

dude i agree
standing still (even doing donuts) is never a good idea when you have no cover and/or you are getting shot at

I'm not sure if I mentioned it already, but I played with Cannonman and Dthen and they tried this technique and it didn't work. But I had they high ground on Rat's Nest and may have gotten the first shot. Like most strategies it's not a 100% effective thing. I'm pretty sure our height advantage had a lot to do with my hog coming out on top.

if you had height advantage then the spinning would not misdirect the shots as its intended. rather it would simply stay above the driver and finish the gunner w/out an issue

a better strategy would be to drive AT the upper hog until no-shields, then drive away, forcing the split or "sharing" of the bullets

I only read about this technique recently here and I haven't yet tried it out because I haven't been on a lot. I'll try it of course but I was wondering: doesn't the gunner stick out the top of the hog? If the enemy gunner is aiming at your gunner's head, how does it matter which way your hog is oriented?

The auto-aiming system of Halo 3 "pulls" some of the bullets toward the closer target, the driver or gunner. This is why it is effective.

I watched that embed from LouieBlack a few times and he seems to use the technique effectively against a hornet twice, but I wonder how it works hog vs. hog. Bullets aimed at the gunner's head would have to be pulled pretty hard downwards to end up hitting the driver instead.

Still, I'll watch for the effect from now on. I pretty much already did spread the love instinctively but I'll keep an extra eye on where the bullets seem to be going.

the hog bullets are more powerful so it actually is needed even MORE then against hornets.

True, the gunner does "stick out" more then the driver... but another hog would be on the same elevation as you (in ur hog)... so if you are facing the enemy hog AS the driver... your gunner has the ENTIRE HOG... (including the faceplate if it is still attached) between him and the enemy hog... most bullets will be "auto directed to the closer enemy (the driver).

to test this try the following
go into a custom game w/ 2 buddies....

buddy 1 should sit in a stantionary hog as the gunner
buddy 2 is your gunner

do some small (tight) donuts about 40-100yds away from the parked hog....
notice where the bullets hit (some will hit the driver... some will hit the gunner... some the hog itself)

do the same thing w/ large (open) donuts... same distance.... pay attention to small differences in where the bullets are hitting

now drive toward the parked hog, THEN away from it.

now take these 3 results and come up w/ your own personal "Best Choice"

Sounds like a decent experiment. Seeing that, as it happens, I am a physics teacher, this systematic way of testing the hypothesis know as "Spreading the Love" appeals greatly to me. I'll do it as soon as I can and post a video of it!

when the turret cross-hair is red you'll see the target switch ... its almost a jerky motion

I know that there are mixed feelings on having passengers in your hog, however if done correctly they can help share the love too. I recal taking out a scorpion with a gauss and a laser in my passenger seat. The first two shots from the tank took out my passenger and there never was a third shot. True it was at the expense of a team mate. But the tank was gone, the hog was intact, and when he respawned I picked him up, took him to a fresh laser,and we were back at it again. Horray for our side

when im facing another hog and head to head and we have passed each other like on a road i spin the hog round to spread the loving, but which way should i spin to keep the gunners reticle on their hog ?
